Simple Tips to Improve Workplace Energy Flow


Whether you're working in-office, or from home, your workspace may be feeling a bit "off". A couple reasons you may be feeling stale, dense energy;

  • There is a lot of fear in the air these day. And if you are communicating with others frequently, you may be picking up on that energy. You may also be picking up that energy from social media and news sources. 
  • We are in September 2020. And it has felt like summer has lasted forever! Especially here in Tucson. We've had one of our hottest summers ever, with very little relief from the monsoons, and major wildfires in our mountains. The mountains which, for many of us, were our source of relief with cooler temps. 
  • You might just be unaware of how to remove stagnant energy, so it has built up over time. 

We'll lets see if we can get your environment feeling better. More healthy and light and bright, so you can flow through life the way you want to. 


Tip 1: Bring Nature Inside

In every office, there is a "Plant Lady", and it is your job to fish them out of the crowd. Because when you find them, and allow them the creativity to bring nature inside, the whole feel of your office will change. It is no longer a cold, concrete box. It becomes vibrant, and happy, and creative. And bonus, purchase some plants that purify the air! When you breath air that is full of toxins (from cleaners, office supplies, and pretty much all man made material), you run at a less optimal pace in terms of cognitive function.

In a study in 2018, published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, scientists looked at the effect of traffic-related air pollution on the central nervous system. They were looking to determine if these pollutants have an adverse impact on cognitive behavior, psycho-motor development in children, cognitive decline and higher risk of dementia in the elderly. And after their study was completed, they determined that the adverse effect was plausible, which is reason for concern! Wouldn't you like the office your employees come to 40+ hours a week, to be free of added toxins that they are already bombarded with on their drive in?




Encourage your employees to each have a plant at their desk. Something that they love looking at, that gives them joy. 

Tip 2: Sage and Palo Santo are Powerful Tools

Sage and Palo Santo have been used by our ancestors for centuries for the use of clearing negative, dense energies. Palo Santo comes from South America, from the Bursera graveolens. And when you translate it, it means "holy wood". The ritual use of smudging with Palo Santo is believed to have originated from the Incans, who said the smoke is medicinal. 

Sage has been primarily used by Native Americans, and has similar qualities. Though there is a difference. Sage is said to be much more overpowering. And while Palo Santo can remove the negative energy, sage removes ALL energy. So you have to use caution when using sage to clear energy. You have to actively replace it with positive energy. 

The way sage and palo santo are used to clear energy and to purify the space is through a ritual referred to as smudging. This is where you light the sage/palo santo (then blow out the flame so a steady stream of smoke is present), hold it in a container (usually an abalone shell), and fan the smoke through the house/office with a feather. Its important you have your exit for the energy ready. So if you need to open a door or window to direct the energy out, do that before you begin. 

I highly recommend you find someone who is trained to do this, as there is a lot more to this than filling a room with smoke. There are prayers that are said. Intentions that are made. And that makes the difference in the end.  



Tip 3: Teach your Office Emotional Intelligence

Most workplaces are completely unaware of how emotional intelligence can set the tone for the office. If your hiring department is routinely hiring employees with low emotional intelligence, you will experience a lot of reactive, heavy emotional energy. 

But what is Emotional Intelligence? 

“[Emotional Intelligence] refers to someone’s ability to perceive, understand and manage their own feelings and emotions” (Chignell, 2018).

There are 5 components that make up Emotional Intelligence;

  1. Self-Awareness
  2. Self-Regulation
  3. Internal Motivation
  4. Empathy
  5. Social Skills

But the most important takeaway is, what vibe are they giving off. There are a lot of great actors out there, and many times, their name is "narcissist". So listen to your gut. When your radar goes off about a person, remove distractions from yourself and listen. It may be that someone had a moment with poor emotional intelligence, and they just need to be made aware. Or, they might be someone who is poisoning the office subtly.

Tip 4: What Energy Does Your Environment Put Off

What type of music do you listen to while you work? Is there a show on YouTube you watch between calls? Are you in the middle of the city, or in a dense forest in the middle of nowhere. All these things change the way your home can feel. 

The first offender to lowering your energy, is multi-tasking. We cannot do it. Honestly. Focus has become a scarce quality in employees these days. We've become uncomfortable with silence. Unable to handle boredom. How many of you could go away for the weekend, by yourself, with an Airbnb to the woods, and not use your phone. No entertainment. No music. You just have to sit with your thoughts. That sounds like torture to most of us! And maybe we don't need to be that extreme. But we should be able to read an email without our minds drifting off on the second sentence. The best way to train your mind to focus is to start eliminating distraction. Do tasks, one at a time. And give every task your full attention. Practice, practice, practice, and it will get easier and more comfortable. 

The next mood-moderator in your home is music and media. What are you playing in your home? What are you playing through your earbuds at work? What are you watching? First off, can you turn it off. Even just for a bit so you can give your sole focus on your project? But if you are listening to music on your break, or your commute, analyze the content! Analyze every bit of it. What are you feeding your soul? Does it make you happy? Does it make you smile? If not, turn it off. It is lowering your energy vibration. 

The next one is your environment outside your home. Are you in the middle of a bustling city? If you are, wow. There are SO many energies all around you. And nature will not be as easily accessible. So you will need to take responsibility to get into nature as much as you can. Maybe a weekend day trip, once a month, or as needed. Or bring nature into your home. If you live near nature, that is great. Take advantage of that and spend as much time in it as you can.



Tip 5: Take the Time to BREATHE

It's the simplest, and maybe the best, way to clear stuck energy. BREATHE. Just go outside, and breathe deeply for 10 breaths. I guarantee you will feel some level of relief just by doing that. And start to notice yourself holding your breath throughout the day. Whenever you notice your body tensing up, close your eyes, breath deeply, and picture your body releasing your tension through your breath.
